Laozi: The Wisdom of Dao and the Cosmic View
The book "Tao Te Ching" by Laozi is one of the most famous works in the Chinese philosophical treasure trove, presenting profound ideas about the concept of "Dao". Laozi believes that "Dao" is the fundamental principle governing all creation and change. It's an intangible, silent, tasteless, odorless entity yet contains everything. He advocates for following natural laws without forcing or competing to achieve harmony between individual inner worlds and societal orders.
Zhuang Zhou: Freedom Will and Life Philosophy
Zhuang Zhou's thoughts were deeply influenced by those of Laozi; he further explored the meaning of "Dao" in his book "Zhuang Zi". Zhuang Zhou developed a life philosophy based on his understanding of "Dao". He advocated for personal freedom against social oppression and constraints. According to him, human life is like a fish swimming freely in vast oceans; each person's life path is unique and unpredictable. Thus, one should naturally live out their true value as an individual.
Confucius: Ethics & Governance through Ren (Benevolence)
Confucius was another influential thinker who contributed significantly to China's intellectual history. His teachings emphasized ethics, governance through ren (benevolence), yi (righteousness), li (etiquette) & zhong (loyalty). Confucianism stresses on interpersonal relationships built upon mutual respect & trust within a hierarchical society emphasizing hierarchy & order.
Mencius: Human Nature & Morality
Mencius continued Confucian thought by focusing more on human nature being inherently good with potential for moral development via education & cultivation rather than innate evil as suggested by some other philosophers like Mo Tzu or Hsun Tzu. Mencius believed that people could be guided towards goodness through proper education which would result in better governance.
Xun Kuang: Social Order Through Education And Rituals
Xun Kuang offered a different perspective from Mencius' optimism regarding human nature. Xun believed humans are inherently bad due to inherent selfishness but can be improved through education/rituals/cultivation leading towards social order/good governance although this might not eradicate entirely evil tendencies but make them manageable allowing people to function harmoniously together
