道教修行讲究返璞归真,故而修道曰修真,得道曰真人。《庄子·大宗师》则曰:“有真人而后有真知。”《妙真经》则曰:“自然者,道之真也。”《庄子·渔父》篇又曰“真者,精诚之至也……true in the inner, spirit moves outside, this is why true is valued.”可见“true”在道教地位之尊崇。
那么何为“true”呢?按照《说文解字》的说法,true就是“仙人变形而登天也”,“from aperting and looking, from being old and wise, from eight horses to ride,”表示仙人所乘坐的载具。也可以看出,这个字跟do和仙是一体难分的,仙人即所谓 true person.

Screen out illusions and keep only what is real—this means keeping all three truths intact. It means returning to Lao Tzu’s natural simplicity while maintaining Zhu Xi’s practicality in governance. It means following Bodhidharma’s path towards enlightenment while embracing wholeheartedly both Lao Tzu’s non-action principle and Zhu Xi’s rituals-based orderliness. In other words it involves integrating or reconciling seemingly contradictory elements into a harmonious whole.
In essence then screening out illusions entails taking away those aspects which obstruct our vision of reality or hinder our journey towards self-realization within nature—the great universe—and not allowing them to cloud our understanding or impede our progress along this path called life.The illusion we need screen out may be any aspect that causes confusion between right & wrong or leads one astray from spiritual growth such as material possessions,power etc.,which can obscure one's perception & lead him/her further away from knowing oneself & understanding nature.
It may also refer back to some old practices like alchemy,magic spells etc.,that were prevalent during early times but are now seen as superstitions & barriers hindering spiritual growth.
Hence it implies getting rid off these superstitious beliefs/practices/obstacles so that one can focus on seeking wisdom,knowing oneself,natural way of living rather than artificial constructs built upon ignorance,supernatural powers etc.,thus leading us closer towards achieving real happiness/self realization/truth/salvation/blessings in life/nature/the universe.
This concept emphasizes that one should seek knowledge,wisdom,cultivate virtues& let go off negative thoughts/emotions/actions,& strive for self improvement based on reason,rationality& compassion rather than blindly following customs/traditions/rules/codes/regulations/values/laws/dogmas/etc..
