Dragon Dance is a traditional folk art that has been passed down in Pinghe County for generations. It is usually composed of three parts: the dragon head, the dragon body, and the dragon tail. Each wooden board used in the dance is called a "section." The sections are connected by wooden pegs and are carried by two strong men who wear colorful costumes and masks.
The boards are decorated with flowers, grasshoppers, fish, and other items made from bamboo, wood, paper, or silk. Each section has one to eight performers who dress up as characters from traditional Chinese operas.
In the past, children who were chosen to perform in Dragon Dance were considered very lucky because they could earn some money. However today it requires more than just luck; parents need to pay a fee for their child to participate.
Pinghe County's Dragon Dance Festival during Lantern Festival night has become an important cultural event that showcases local customs and traditions. The festival features performances of Lion Dance Teams accompanied by drummers on horseback playing drums while riding horses around town square area which adds excitement to this annual event!
It’s not just about watching but also participating – people can join hands with artists creating their own pieces at designated stations where they will be guided through various workshops like making lanterns or painting red envelopes filled with coins given out during New Year celebrations after finishing tasks successfully done together!
