毛南族 marriages have a unique feature: when young people meet, they often sing folk songs together. The authority of the maternal uncle is prominent - when a girl gets married, she must give gifts to her maternal uncle. The wedding ceremonies are complex and full of traditional colors.
Free love in Mao Nan society: Mao Nan people have always had a custom of free love through singing. Before singing, people often see an interesting phenomenon called "stealing hats."
Stealing hats is something for young men and girls. When chasing markets or eating joyous occasions or gathering activities in the countryside, if a boy sees a girl he likes, he will try his best to find an opportunity to take away her hat (or some take away her handkerchief). If the girl's hat is taken away, she turns around and looks at the boy with disapproval if she doesn't like him; then she takes back her hat. If this time it can't be taken back, later on someone else will help bring it back or ask for it back from the original owner. When this happens, boys know they won't make friends with that person.
If girls feel that boys are worthy of their affection, they silently agree and let boys take their hats; immediately or later on some days they also ask for something as a souvenir from that person.
There are also some eager-to-get-married girls who intentionally expose their handkerchiefs during market trips or while accompanying others as "nursemaids," making it easy for boys who like them to steal them.
The stealing-hat phase indicates friendship only; it's just a prelude to romance.
Mao Nan marriage customs:
Free choice by song.
Mediation by third parties.
Parental arrangement.
Involving eight characters' compatibility test before marriage proposal.
Following local customs after marriage proposal.
Divorce due to incompatible characters after marriage proposal but not yet married.
In recent years there has been significant change in marital practices among ethnic groups such as Han Chinese and Miao women marrying outside their communities more frequently than ever before.
These changes reflect modern influences on traditional practices.
Conclusion:
Mao Nan culture reflects both ancient traditions and modern influences.
Influence from other cultures may lead to changes in cultural norms over time.
Understanding these changes can provide valuable insights into understanding cultural evolution.
