南宋《宋朝事实类苑》中载“邢州开元寺一僧院壁，有五代时隐士钟离权草书诗二绝，笔势遒劲，诗句亦佳。”这两首绝句，不仅反映了他的文学才能，也展示了他内心世界的深邃和智慧。元代《金莲正宗记》和《金莲正宗仙源像传》等全真道著作中，都没有明确提到钟离真人的诞辰，但确定了他是“京兆咸阳人”，即今陕西咸阳人，并且“容貌雄伟，学通文武。”

During his lifetime, he was granted the title "Zhenren" or "True Person" by Emperor Renzong of Song Dynasty. According to North Song's Shu Pu (Book on Calligraphy), Zongli Quan was known for his exceptional calligraphic skills and literary prowess. He was said to have exchanged verses with Lu Dongbin (one of Eight Immortals) during which they engaged in intellectual debates that resulted in poetic compositions. This anecdote showcases not only his artistic talent but also his erudite nature.
South Song's Ji Xian Zhuan (Biographies of Immortals) provides further insight into Zongli Quan's mysterious past. The text states that he entered Mount Tai'an during Tang Dynasty and remained there until Five Dynasties period without providing specific information about his birthplace or family background. Yang Shen, a Ming dynasty scholar, conducted research on this figure concluding that Zongli Quan lived at the same time as Lü Yan another prominent figure from Tang-Dynasty era.
In addition to these records found in historical texts like Shi Jing Cong Zhuan (Commentary on Shi Jing), we find references to two poems inscribed by clock-officials hand written by him on wall paintings within open monasteries walls during Five Dynasties period which showcase both skillful writing techniques combined with profound thoughtfulness expressed through poetry lines.
The fact remains that while no exact date has been recorded for clock-officials birth or death dates are unknown but it can be confirmed he hailed from present-day Sha'anxi province specifically Kahm-yang city before moving southwards where he studied under Master Dōng Huá who passed down teachings concerning 'Dao' onto him following which clock-official then went ahead teaching Pure Yang Lü Yán & Sea Crab Liu Yán resulting them learning Dao too; thus contributing significantly towards laying foundations for whole true doctrine lineage.
